One of the hardest parts of a training schedule is to have the time to follow it. From working 40+ work weeks, spending time with family and friends, and doing everything else that life demands, sometimes there just isn’t time for running. I’ve also drawn inspiration from hearing about how runners balance training with other aspects of life. I’m currently trying to do this in my own life that involves 50 hour work weeks.
The plan I have been following is to take running clothes and shoes into work on Monday morning, run home from work Monday through Thursday, and take all of my work clothes for the week home on the bus at the end of the day on Friday. I have a pouch in my running shorts for house keys, debit card, and driver’s license. I also have an arm band with a pocket that I put my cell phone in when I run home.
This plan has worked great for me so far. It has enabled me to combine the commute home with my workout. Of course, it can be hard to find the motivation to run home after a long day of work, but it’s still much easier than taking the bus home and then trying to run from my house.
I’m sure that there a bunch of great stories about how people combine commutes and runs. If you have one, let me know.
