Running with Dogs

Maybe it’s because every dog I have owned likes to suddenly stop and smell everything along the sidewalk, or enjoys chasing other dogs, but I have a hard time having man’s best friend be my training partner. I know that some people swear by their canine running partners. Not only does it motivate them to go on runs, but it also helps them feel safe if they are running in a dangerous area. Perhaps the secret is to set ground rules and train dogs how to properly run with you.

Whatever the case, it is very important that you don’t run too much too soon with your dogs. Gradually increase mileage so your dog’s bones and muscles grow accustomed to long distance running. Make sure that your dog has eaten and is properly hydrated. Also, the common consensus is that dogs with good bone structure who have been bred to run like border collies, shepherds, and labs are the best type of training partner. Finally, be careful not to force your dog to keep going if it looks like he or she needs to go to the bathroom.

Those who like to swing their arms when they run (pretty much everyone), should consider buying a hands free leash. There are a lot of these products out there, but I have heard good things about The Buddy System
