Relaxation is one of the most keys to running fast. When relaxed, a runner’s breathing is rhythmic and strong, his or her oxygen supply is not needlessly wasted on contracting tight muscles, and the runner’s mind is not full of panic, but rather focused and confident. Of course, saying “runner’s need to stay relaxed” is much easier said than done. How can runners help themselves stay relaxed during all-out exertion?
In my experience, one of the key indicators of relaxation is my jaw and shoulders. If my jaw is tight and clenched and my shoulders are full of tension I am not running relaxed. Monitoring the relaxation level of jaws and shoulders can tell you whether you are running efficiently and smooth or tight and constrained.
When running, loosen your jaw and it allow it to move freely. Let go of the tension in your shoulder muscles and keep your chin level to ensure relaxed neck muscles. Although this technique focuses on the non-running muscles of the upper body, keep in mind that these muscles play a critical role in breathing function. Without proper breathing, a runner will not obtain enough oxygen to run fast.
The next time you run a race or workout be mindful of the relaxation state of your upper body to ensure that you a running smoothly and efficiently.
