We’ve all heard the comment after telling people that we are runners, “Oh really? Well, that really hurts your knees.” Sure, it’s annoying to hear that, but is it true? The answer is a qualified “no.” “Qualified” because you can actually do damage to your knees if you run too much without sufficient mileage build up. However, by adhering to a smart training program, running can actually be good for your knees.
The fact is if we run responsibly–wear supportive shoes and replace them when worn out, rehab injuries properly, incorporate cross-training and rest days into our schedules as needed–we’re no more susceptible to [osteo arthritis] than the general population, say medical experts. Actually, it’s the doubters on the sidelines who could have a better chance of developing it.
