Don’t Wait to Fuel Your Body Post-Workout

After a difficult workout, many runners have no interest in eating anything. Sipping water or an energy drink might be okay, but eating can be unappetizing in the initial post-workout minutes. However, the immediate period after a workout is the best time fuel your body with carbohydrates and protein.

A recent review of studies that have analyzed the post-workout recovery found that runners should not waste the opportunity to fuel their bodies after a workout.

In one specific study, researchers broke participants into four groups labeled Pre, Post, Twenty-Four, and Con. The participants in the Pre group consumed a carbohydrate and protein supplement before exercise. Participants in the Post group consumed the supplement immediately after exercise. The Twenty-Four group participants consumed the supplement twenty-four hours after exercise. Finally, the Con group operated as the “control” group and did not consume the supplement.

Compared to participants in the Twenty-Four, Pre and Con groups, the post-workout group experienced a considerable reduction in delayed muscle soreness and increased muscle function. Therefore, in order to maximize your fitness, try to consume carbohydrates and protein immediately post-workout – even if you don’t feel like it. The long-term benefits are worth the effort.
